Company History

Friend Lumber was incorporated in June, 1945 by James London and Ralph Robb. Ralph Robb passed away in the early 1950’s, and his stake in the company was purchased by James London. In the early 1950’s we were primarily a business that assisted contractors and builders until the second generation of ownership entered the business. In April of 1964, our first retail store was opened in Lowell, Massachusetts. Paul London and his brother-in-law, Sheldon Jaffe, managed the business and opened a second store located in Burlington, Massachusetts during July of 1972. The company prospered and the third generation and current owner, Mark Jaffe, started working at the company in 1974. After working his way up through Friend Lumber, Mark purchased the other family member’s interests and moved the Lowell branch to its present location in Hudson, New Hampshire.

Today there are two storefronts: one in Burlington, Massachusetts and the other in Hudson, New Hampshire.

Friend Lumber has a three-pronged mission.

  1. To do the best job possible in serving our customers.
  2. To compensate and treat each of our employees in a fair and respectful manner.
  3. To earn a fair rate of return.

Friend Lumber continuously grows in our knowledge of the industry and our ability to provide genuinely knowledgeable customer service. Our employees are experts in their field and embody the true definition of what a “Project Pro” stands for: they provide services that leave our customers feeling that “Doing it yourself doesn’t mean doing it alone.” Friend Lumber employees pride themselves on creating and sustaining strong relationships with each customer.
